But the greatest comics provoke empathy, and only genuine warmth generates empathy.
Most people know Jimmy Durante as a comedian, and he was one of the best. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent. Jimmy's gravelly voice was able to convey so much emotion when he sang and even the lines he sometimes half-sang/half-spoke sound like poetry. I'm nothing more than a lover of great music, so don't just take my word for it. I would name this recording of I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS one of Gordon's top five arrangements of all time. I have heard most of his work with just about every singer, as well as a good deal of his solo efforts. Gordon Jenkins' orchestrations have long been heralded (and sometimes knocked) for being evocative of drama, of searing feelings and at once recognizable. The use of one finger on the piano in the Irving Berlin classic WHEN I LOST YOU puts this version over the top, and I cannot begin to describe the emotions relayed when Jimmy Durante starts (and FINISHES) the immortal I'LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS. There is Jimmy's wistful "talk-through" of the great Meredith Wilson penned "MY WISH" (with orchestra AND chorus abetting Jimmy, as is the case on most tracks) and the standard WHEN DAY IS DONE, equally as heartfelt and borderline dark and moody. Written and recorded at a time when there were no terrorists or 401K or economy dilemmas, one need only listen to this song that sets the tone of the entire album to be transported. The title track, A WAY OF LIFE, reminds us all what it's all REALLY about anymore.
The pairing of Jenkins with Durante is such a hit, one can liken it to the pairing of Jenkins with Sinatra or riously. OK I'll admit one would never associate Jimmy Durante with the lush, soaring strings of the great Gordon Jenkins orchestrations, much less GREAT singing, but Ol' Schnozzola does just exactly that on this handful of heartfelt ballads, each one dripping with beauty. Durante was by no means a technically accomplished vocalist, but he negotiated the sessions with aplomb and created a piece of work very different from, but just as charming as, the comedy that had made him a star.

Mixing Durante's utterly unique voice with lush strings and a vocal chorus, September Song is a left-field masterpiece full of wistful and affecting performances. It was Durante's only album to enter the Top 40, and the title track made Billboard's Top Pop 100.
